Middle Ages 500 -1500 CE Europe - Holy Roman Empire - Charlemagne Feudalism - Manor system - land owned by the king or church, given to lords and worked by serfs. Serfs - unofficial slaves. Viking invasions Christianity accepted religion. Roman Catholic Church thrived & unified Europe. Pope- great political power. Islam was spreading in the Middle East and Northern Africa - Charles Martel. Crusades - Christians prevented from entering Jerusalem by Muslim Turks. Interest in trade revived after the Crusades. William the Conqueror fights the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and becomes the first Norman king of England. Inquisitions - punished heretics (non-Christians or those who went against the church) King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 in England. This limited teh king's power. Black Death - plague that killed 100 million Europeans. It was spread by fleas on rats. Hundred Years War between France and England. Joan of Arc - French peasent girl, who claimed God told her to help free France of English rule. Later she was captured by the English and burned at the stake. |
