Byzantine is the old Eastern Roman Empire. Constantinople was the capital and the crossroads of trade between Europe and Asia. Justinian Code - rewriten Roman laws, that become the basis for most modern European countries. Emperor Justinian's wife Theodora, influenced Justinian to include laws for womens' rights. Great Schism of 1054 - Christianity splits into the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Christian Church (Icons - images of Jesus, Mary & saints). Mosaics - pictures using small pieces of tile or stone. Contantinople will become Istanbul when the city is taken over by the Muslims. |
